Photo Requirements For US Passports
We meet and exceed all passport and visa photo requirements. Here are a few requirements for your photo, so you know what to expect:
Photos must not be older than six months
- Photos must measure 2×2″ (5×5 cm)
- Photos of applicant’s head must be between 1″ to 1 3/8″ (2.5 to 3.5 cm) when measured vertically
- Photos must have a white background
- Applicant must face camera directly, with both ears visible
Photos should be “full face,” meaning the applicant should be facing the camera directly. Head coverings and hats can only be worn in the photo due to religious purposes, but it should still not cover your face. Eyeglasses should also be taken off before taking the photo.
When it comes to attire, stick with wearing business-casual, or wear something you would normally wear on the daily. Make sure your clothes don’t cover your face and that they’re not too flashy. Your photo may also not be approved if you are wearing a costume, something with excessive bling, or camouflage print. It’s also a good idea to stay away from the color white, since the background of the photo needs to be white. Wear a shirt that will help provide a contrast against your background.
Resist the urge to smile or to wear tons of makeup. Your passport photo is the one that TSA agents will use to make sure you and that photo look the same. Try to imitate your everyday style, in both hair, clothes, and makeup, before you take your photo.
For babies and children, rules are slightly more flexible, but they will still need to try their best to face the camera directly.
